SUMIF vs SUMIFS vs SUMPRODUCT

Three ways to sum with conditions. SUMIF handles one condition, SUMIFS handles many, and SUMPRODUCT can handle virtually anything — including array logic.

SUMIF

Syntax

=SUMIF(range, criteria, [sum_range])

Example

=SUMIF(A:A, "North", B:B)

✓ Pros

  • • Simple, easy to read
  • • Perfect for one-condition sums
  • • Works in all Excel versions
  • • Great for beginner-friendly formulas

✗ Cons

  • • Only one condition
  • • Criteria and sum_range must be same-size ranges

Use when…

You have a single condition. "Sum sales where region = North." It's the cleanest option for simple cases.

SUMIFS

Syntax

=SUMIFS(sum_range, criteria_range1, criteria1, [criteria_range2, criteria2], ...)

Example

=SUMIFS(C:C, A:A, "North", B:B, "Q1")

✓ Pros

  • • Multiple conditions (up to 127)
  • • Same speed as SUMIF
  • • Clear, readable structure

✗ Cons

  • • Sum range must come first (easy to forget)
  • • All conditions use AND logic (not OR)

Use when…

You have 2+ conditions. "Sum sales where region = North AND quarter = Q1." It's the SUMIF upgrade for most real-world scenarios.

SUMPRODUCT

Syntax

=SUMPRODUCT(array1, [array2], ...)

Example

=SUMPRODUCT((A2:A100="North")*(B2:B100="Q1")*C2:C100)

✓ Pros

  • • Handles OR logic and complex conditions
  • • Works with array operations
  • • Can do counted sums, weighted averages, and more
  • • Extremely powerful for advanced scenarios

✗ Cons

  • • Slower on very large datasets
  • • Harder to read for non-experts
  • • Overkill for simple conditional sums

Use when…

You need OR logic, partial matches, or complex multi-array calculations. Also useful in older Excel where newer functions aren't available.

⚡ Quick Verdict

Use **SUMIF** for one condition. **SUMIFS** for multiple AND conditions. **SUMPRODUCT** when you need OR logic, wildcards across arrays, or complex calculations that SUMIFS can't handle.
