SUBSTITUTE

Replaces occurrences of a specific text string within another text string.

Syntax

=SUBSTITUTE(text, old_text, new_text, [instance_num])

Example

Excel
=SUBSTITUTE(A2, "Old", "New")

Replaces all occurrences of "Old" with "New" in the text in A2.

Tips & Notes

  • →Case-sensitive (unlike SEARCH)
  • →Specify instance_num to replace only the Nth occurrence
  • →Use to remove characters by replacing with ""
